Eulogy for the Second Face

2025

Performance

Statement

A proverb theory states that we have three faces: 1, the public persona, which we present to the world; 2, the intimate self, which we present only to close ones; 3, the hidden core, which we show no one.

This performance humanizes these three faces into three separate characters. In the video, the second face dies. The first and third faces attend the funeral, where they receive footless long stem glass vessels filled with red wine. They consume the wine from each vessel, pass it on, and drop it to the floor, breaking the glass and spilling the wine.

The ritualistic performance, originally over 70 minutes long, consists of repeated motions of the first face passing vessels of wine to the third face, through the mediation of the now-deceased second face. It explores mourning as absurdity, awkwardness, and disharmony when the two living bodies must interact each other through a dead one, when the conduit that channels one’s inner and outer self falls apart.
